Have you ever asked yourself, “Is it me… or is this workplace just not the right fit?”
If you are a first-year nurse or an internationally trained nurse, let me reassure you, feeling unsettled, overwhelmed, or misaligned does not mean you are failing.
It often means you are outgrowing your environment.
The three Rs”—Reflect, Reframe, and Rebuild is a practical mindset and action framework to help you find a good-fit organization, overcome unsettled feeling, learn, grow, and thrive.
R #1: REFLECT – Understanding What Triggered the Search
Reflection is not about blame. It is about clarity, before you submit another application, pause and ask:
What triggered my desire to leave or look elsewhere?
Common Challenges That Trigger the Search
- Feeling unsupported during orientation or preceptorship
- Fear of asking questions without judgment
- Chronic stress, anxiety, or dread before shifts
- Being assigned responsibilities beyond your readiness
- Cultural misunderstandings or communication barriers
- Lack of mentorship, feedback, or guidance
For internationally trained nurses, this may be amplified by:
- Navigating a new healthcare system
- Adjusting to different communication styles
- Managing bias or cultural assumptions
Reflection Question:
What specifically is draining me—and what energizes me at work?
R #2: REFRAME – Recognizing Red Flags Without Losing Confidence
Here is the truth many nurses are afraid to hear: Not every organization is designed to support new or internationally trained nurses, and that is not your fault.
Red Flags to Pay Attention To
- “You’ll figure it out as you go” replaces structured orientation
- High turnover on the unit—especially among new nurses
- Lack of clear policies, procedures, or escalation pathways
- Dismissive responses to safety concerns
- Preceptors who are burned out or unwilling to teach
- A culture where asking questions is labeled as weakness or difficult to work with.
Reframing means shifting from “I’m not good enough” to “This environment is not aligned with my growth needs.”
Key Reframe: A poor fit is not a personal failure—it is a key insight guiding your next move.
R #3: REBUILD – Intentionally Finding a Good-Fit Organization
Now comes the empowered phase—Rebuild.
This is where you take control of your career with intention.
Here are some strategies to help you discover a “Good-Fit Organization”
- Clarify Your Learning Needs
Know whether you need structured orientation, extended preceptorship, or mentorship. - Research Beyond the Job Posting
Look at retention rates, reviews, and how long nurses stay on the unit. - Evaluate Leadership Accessibility
Can you approach charge nurses, educators, or managers without fear? - Look for Diversity and Inclusion in Action
Not just policies—watch how differences are respected day-to-day. - Ask About Professional Development
Support for certifications, workshops, or continuing education matters. - Choose Growth Over Prestige
A “famous” organization is meaningless if you cannot grow there.- Reflect on what you need. Reframe what did not work. Rebuild with intention.
As a first-year or internationally trained nurse, you are not behind.
You are becoming. The right organization will not just hire you—It will invest in you.
It is important to protect your learning, and honor your potential.
You deserve a workplace where you can say: “I am supported. I am safe. I am growing.”
